We posted this for its historical interest, the recordings are old and have a bit of tape hiss on them.
The tracks are taken from a cassette originally recorded in the early 80s in West Berlin. To make the recordings, the musicians involved had to smuggle themselves from Poland, via East Germany into West Berlin (this was in the days of Communism and the Iron Curtain)
Originally recorded using a portable studio set up, the tapes where given to us by a member of Gypsy Stars - they are of his Uncle (violin) and other family members.
Many of the songs are popular old/traditional songs performed by Roma musicians in the region. Some are still performed today, although maybe slightly differently.
